Award-winning South African writer Deon Opperman presents writer-AI collaboration techniques for amplifying your storytelling skills.

WRITER-AI COLLABORATION

The science fiction visionary, Werner Vinge, referred to human-AI collaboration as ‘intelligence amplification’ and ‘merging of competencies’ – the combining of human intuition and skills with the encyclopaedic knowledge base and generative power of AI.

But even in the coming age of superhuman artificial intelligence, no artificial intelligence engine will be able to tell the specific story that you want to tell, for the simple reason that it cannot see the world through your eyes.

However, what collaboration with a skilfully guided and directed AI can do is amplify your creative output like never before in the history of humankind.

• optimise AI responses to serve the story that you  want to tell;

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

By the end of the course you will have:

• expanded your plot and character development skillset
• incorporated those skills into structured, writer-focused prompts;
• conceptualised the seed idea for a story;
• collaborated with an AI to develop your seed idea into a detailed Nutshell Outline;
• incorporated all the techniques you have learned into a customised AI assistant (CustomGPT or Claude Project) for the efficient writer-AI development of your future stories.The Nutshell Outline captures the primary characters and essential core action of the plot, and serves as the story concept for a fully-fledged outline/synopsis.

You must be an Open Window student or staff member
A passion for storytelling
A mind open to new ideas
Access to a large-language model AI platform (e.g. ChatGPT 4, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, Gemini 2.0)
